Difference between pilates and clinical pilates

Pilates is a set of exercises invented by Joseph Pilates to preserve his strength and flexibility in between his dancing commitments.  These exercises were mostly focusing on abdominal workouts and do not suit everyone.

Clinical Pilates is where the use of the Pilates exercises and its equipment (the reformer and trapeze table) to perform exercises that help realign the spine and decrease nerve entrapment.  The exercises teach the person to be able to control their muscles to alleviate and prevent muscle spasms.  The exercises are varied just as we are all different.  Each person has their own bias (preferred direction).  If you exercise against your bias you will tighten the nervous system.  If you exercise into your bias then you will loosen your nervous system.

Nerve irritation causes many symptoms they include:

  • Reflexive (involuntary/automatic) muscle guarding (tight muscles)
  • Numbness and/or pins and needles
  • Pain spreading into the arms and legs
  • Fatigue and lethargy
  • Loss of strength
  • Loss of balance
  • Loss of flexibility
  • Dizziness
  • Gut disturbances
  • Anything and everything the nerves control
